Slow Down and Look Around

Who else finds themselves mindlessly going about their days? Like every day is the same and there is nothing memorable about them? That days and years are passing by in the blink of an eye? Everyone struggles with this in some capacity. Many are living with feelings of angst because they are not seeing change or progress in their lives. They might be getting so caught up in the effort it takes to get through the day, that they’re not making any time for themselves. Or they don’t know how to say no to things and end up living their lives pleasing other people. It is of paramount importance that we not let time waste away because tomorrow is not guaranteed.

The kryptonite to these feelings of angst and habitual routines is to slow down and look around. The world is always moving, literally and figuratively, and if we allow our time to be consumed trying to keep up, we are destined to fall behind. Let that sink in. It is when we are doing everything in our power to keep up that we lose our footing because we neglect our own wellbeing. Slowing down and looking around gives us the opportunity to analyze the situation. Doing so provides a more clear vision of the task at hand and allows us to appreciate that moment more fully. The work can wait, but what doesn’t wait is time.

I encourage you today when you feel overwhelmed by whatever you’re doing to take a step away and look around. When I did this today, I looked out the window and noticed the vibrant and beautiful autumn colors of the trees. I let myself find peace while watching a pair of finches investigating a birdhouse to see if it was a good place to call home. Then later in the evening, I went for a bike ride and witnessed an astounding sunset, and couldn’t help but stop to take a picture. These small details are easily overseen during our every day routines, but given the opportunity, can make the day more memorable.

What are you in such a hurry for? Life is about the journey, not the destination so you might as well make some stops along the way to remember it better.
