Encouraging Words from Jordan Peterson

Clip of an interview with Jordan Peterson

Jordan Peterson has become a prominent figure in society due to his dumbfounding knowledge of modern psychology and well articulated worldview. His willingness to express what he believes to be the truth (often backed by research and data), despite some people’s distaste for his individualistic ideologies, is something to be applauded.

I recently started watching some videos of Jordan Peterson on YouTube, and immediately was connected to his soft spoken knowledge of so many deeply meaningful topics. Nothing he says comes across as forced or menacing, but rather welcoming and encouraging. His underlying message is one of motivation and defiance of difficulties in life. I was able to find a great segment of this message in an interview with Fredrik Skavlan. If you’re interested in watching more, the link for the full interview will be at the end of this article.

The message he displays during this clip is one of insurmountable influence once fully understood. He said that he “believe[s] people are stronger than their misfortunes” and that “if you turn around and confront the vulnerability… you’ll find within yourself a strength that will transcend that.” After hearing this, I felt it was necessary to share it with the world! His message is encouraging people to be courageous and face the fears and insecurities we all have. No matter what those might be, the only way to progress in life is to overcome them.

For myself, something I have always been fearful of is not being prepared to defend myself in a fight. In October of 2021, my girlfriend encouraged me to face that fear and sign up for martial arts. That was only the first step in overcoming the fear though. Now, at the end of the classes we are able to spar with people, and my partner happens to be around 50 pounds heavier than me, which means he can hit pretty damn hard. I’m thankful for having him as a sparring partner because if a situation ever were to arise where I needed to defend myself I feel like my training with him has put me in a better position to be able to do so. This is just an example of something that maybe you could relate to yourself. Maybe you’re afraid of public speaking or self-conscious about your body. These things are only going to get better if you face them and make a plan to overcome them.

He ends the video with a call to action for young men and women by saying they need to “develop a vision and take on some responsibility and understand that they have a vital role to play in the world. That the lack of their best hurts everything!” *Mic drop* That last line hits hard because of the weight it hold in truth. Whenever we do something in life, it should always be to the best of our ability. Especially in situations where you’re doing something that you might not enjoy doing; like cleaning the bathroom. Why would you ever want to settle for anything less than your best. When we do something with full effort it builds us up. Every task we do is like laying a brick while building a house. If you don’t take your time and make sure it’s placed properly, the house will not be able to withstand strong weather. People who settle for less are always the ones that have the most regrets during their old age. Even if you are someone who has lived the majority of your life this way, it is never too late to make a change!

The moral of the video is always do your best!
